Self-care and endings

April 7, 2025

Dear College of Education Community,

Self-care is crucial during endings, offering a space for processing emotions, reflecting on experiences, and preparing for the future, whether those endings are personal, professional, or relationship-based.

Here's how self-care can be particularly helpful during endings:

1. Acknowledging and Processing Emotions:

  • Allow yourself to feel:

Endings can bring a range of emotions, from sadness and grief to relief and uncertainty. It's important to allow yourself to feel these emotions without judgment.

  • Journaling or creative expression:

Writing in a journal, drawing, or engaging in other creative activities can help process difficult emotions and gain clarity.

  • Talking to someone you trust:

Sharing your feelings with a friend, family member, or therapist can provide support and perspective.

2. Practicing Self-Compassion:

  • Be kind to yourself: Endings can be challenging, and it's easy to be hard on yourself during this time. Practice self-compassion and remember that it's okay to not be okay.
  • Focus on your strengths: Reflect on your accomplishments and the positive aspects of the situation.
  • Celebrate small victories: Acknowledge and celebrate any progress you make during this time.

3. Engaging in Self-Care Activities:

  • Prioritize physical well-being: Ensure you're getting enough sleep, eating nutritious meals, and exercising regularly.
  • Relax and unwind: Engage in activities that help you relax and de-stress, such as reading, taking a bath, or listening to music.
  • Connect with others: Spend time with loved ones and engage in social activities that bring you joy.
  • Explore new hobbies: Discovering new interests can help you move forward and find new meaning.
  • Set goals and priorities: Focus on what's important to you and work towards achieving your goals.

4. Preparing for the Future:

  • Reflect on the past: Take time to reflect on what you've learned from the ending and how it can help you move forward.
  • Set new goals: Use this time to identify your goals and create a plan for achieving them.
  • Embrace the unknown: Endings can lead to new opportunities and experiences. Approach the future with an open mind and a sense of hope.

Need I say more?

Warmly,

Shari
