Advanced Study in Educational Therapy Post-Master's Certificate

Program Description

The Educational Therapy Post-Master’s Certificate Program, designed in collaboration with the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), provides post-master’s degree students an opportunity to develop expertise and professional skills related to educational therapy. The program combines educational and therapeutic approaches for evaluation, remediation, case management and communication/advocacy on behalf of children, adolescents and adults with learning challenges. Students who complete the certificate program, which includes courses and field experience, will be awarded the Advanced Study in Educational Therapy Certificate. Graduates of the Certificate Program meet the academic course requirements to qualify for AET’s Associate level of membership. Moreover, 50 supervisory hours for the professional level of membership are met by the internship, which is the culminating experience in the certificate program.

Program Requirements

Effective Fall 2024, admission requirements to theÌýEducational Therapy Post-Master’s Certificate ProgramÌýhave been updated as follows:

A. Requirements for Admission

  1. Completion of a Master's Degree program in Special Education or a related field as approved by the Educational Therapy Program Coordinator, with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  2. Good standing at the last university attended.
  3. Two prerequisite courses: One approved course in Child/Adolescent Development and one approved course in Human Learning.
  4. Pre-admission advisement meeting.
  5. Minimum of two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent of 2,000 hours, in providing educational and/or therapeutic services. Experience must be verified using the form provided.
  6. Two letters of recommendation completed by individuals who have known you in a professional and/or academic capacity related to the field of education over time using the form provided.
  7. Personal statement (written responses to provided questions).
  8. Livescan clearance using form provided.
  9. Documentation of a negative tuberculosis test result within the last 2 years. The test must clearly indicate a negative result and may completed any health facility. Currently enrolled ¼ªÏé·» students may contact the Klotz Student Health Center for a TB test.
  10. Current CPR certification covering infant, child, and adult CPR. Submit a copy of your signed CPR card (front and back) with your application.

B. Additional Information

  1. Special Education Foundational Courses may be required if not met by equivalent coursework.
  2. With approval from the ET Coordinator, program prerequisite course(s) that have not been completed prior to admission may be taken once accepted, but both courses must be completed prior to enrollment in 600-level Educational Therapy courses.
  3. Only courses completed within the last 7 years may be considered for transfer credit, with a maximum of 9 units possible.

*Does not include the Child/Adolescent Development or Human Learning program prerequisites.

  • SPED 673 (3) Principles of Educational Therapy for Individuals with Exceptional Needs
  • SPED 672 (3) Advanced Assessment
  • SPED 671 (3) Advanced Study of Literacy Problems – required clinical component includes a minimum of 10 hours of supervised clinical experience with 1 client, 1 hour per week
  • SPED 676 (3) Clinical Case Management
ET Core Courses Year 2
  • SPED 679* (8) & SPED 679S* (3) Internship in Educational Therapy – clinical component includes a minimum of 50 hours of supervised clinical experience with 2 clients, twice per week, for a total of 4 hours each week
