MLK Day of Service: Get Involved!

Join us to honor Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy through service, volunteerism, and strengthening ties to our community! Together, we will learn about food accessibility and sustainable gardening practices. We'll also get hands-on with some volunteering in the garden! This can include weeding, watering, pruning, or other general garden maintenance, so please wear closed-toe shoes and bring something to hydrate with. Restrooms and a water fountain/refill station are available on site. Lunch will be provided!

Also please be sure to complete our Liability Waiver Form (.pdf) and bring your copy with you.

Join Us for a Wildfire Discussion & Resource Fair

March 7, 2025 | Refreshments at 2:30 PM

Recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area have highlighted the urgent need for greater understanding, proactive engagement, and community resilience in fire preparedness, response, and rebuilding efforts. To address these critical issues, the ��鷻 Institute for Sustainability, in collaboration with Conservation Concierges, the ��鷻 Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, and with the support of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, invites you to the Wildfire Discussion & Resource Fair.

This event will:

Educate and engage students and the community on wildfire preparedness and response strategies.
Connect with organizations offering job and internship opportunities.
Foster meaningful discussions with leading experts and practitioners.

What to Expect:

Lectures and Panel Discussion: Engage with top leaders in wildfire management and response to gain insights into fire science, community resilience, and action steps for rebuilding affected areas.

3-4pm: Student Focused Lectures and Panel with California State Senators Caroline Menjivar (20th District) and Henry Stern (27th District)
5:00-6:30: Community Focused Lectures and Panel

4-5PM: Resource and Opportunity Fair: Representatives from ��鷻, non-profits, and businesses will be available to discuss opportunities, internships and resources.

Confirmed organizations attending include: ��鷻 Career Center, ��鷻 Center for Geospatial Technology, ��鷻 Project Rebound, CA Climate Action Corps, BreastfeedLA, Flame Mapper, Amigos de los Rios, LA County Community Planning Department, North East Trees, LA Works, CalFire, LA County Fire Department, and more.

We welcome students, faculty, staff, community leaders, alumni, non-profit organizations, and anyone passionate about wildfire response, emergency preparedness, community building, environmental action, and building a safer future.

How to Get Involved:

Organizations - Please register here if you are interested in tabling on behalf of your organization from 3-5pm.
Resource and Opportunity Fair - Please register here if you are interested in attending the Resource Fair from 4-5pm.

Student-Focused Lectures & Panel — Register here if you will attend the lecture, on the current wildfire conditions in Los Angeles and neighboring counties. from 3 to 4 pm We will explore the critical geographical and environmental factors contributing to wildfire risk in this region. Speakers include the honorable Senator Henry Stern, Senator Caroline Menjivar, and others.
Community-Focused Lectures and Panel Discussion — Register here if you will attend the community-focused lecture, which will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. The lecture will cover essential strategies to prevent and minimize the impact of fires on people and places, including the role of Fire Safe Councils in fostering community resilience. It will also include a Q&A session with wildfire experts.

Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion with acclaimed author and journalist Mark Arax as he explores one of California’s most pressing challenges: the tension between growth and sustainability in the face of climate change. Drawing from his extensive research and award-winning works on California’s water, agriculture, and land-use policies, Arax will examine the state’s complex relationship with expansion, development, and environmental stewardship.

As California grapples with record droughts, wildfires, and shifting climate patterns, the question of whether—and how—the state should continue to grow has never been more urgent. This conversation will delve into the political, economic, and ecological forces shaping California’s future, offering insights into the difficult choices ahead.

��鷻 Mark Arax:

Mark Arax is an author and journalist whose writings on California and the West have received numerous awards for literary nonfiction. A former staffer at the Los Angeles Times, his work has appeared in The New York Times and the California Sunday Magazine. Arax has been called a “21st Century John Steinbeck” for his books that pry open the soul of California. A writer of essays, history, biography and journalism, he is a two-time winner of the California Book Award and a recipient of Stanford University's William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. His most recent work, The Dreamt Land: Chasing Water and Dust Across California, a national bestseller, has been hailed by critics as one of the most important books ever written about the West. The New York Times has named the The Dreamt Land and one of Mark’s previous books, The King of California, to a short list of California’s best literature over the past 150 years.
