Bilingual Teaching Residency Grant Program

��鷻 has a partnership with the Multicultural Learning Center (MLC), a TK-8 public charter school to engage candidates in the Multiple Subject Credential program in a paid yearlong residency. Candidates must be bilingual in Spanish and pursuing a bilingual authorization as part of their credential and they will conduct their full year of student teaching at MLC under the mentorship of an experienced bilingual educator. Candidates will receive a stipend of $30,000 for the school year.

MLC implements a Dual Immersion Program in English and Spanish and prioritizes social justice, social emotional learning, biliteracy, and multiculturalism. The school has been serving the community since 2001 and has engaged many ��鷻 students as residents, student teachers, and paraprofessional staff over the years.

As part of the Residency program, candidates will have the opportunity to attend professional development workshops and receive coaching and support from passionate educators, while getting to know the MLC community. Upon completion of the residency and credential program, candidates will be employed by the school.

Welcoming Cat Maiorca, Assistant Professor, Elementary STEM Education

We are pleased to welcome Cat Maiorca, new Assistant Professor, Elementary STEM, in the Department of Elementary Education. Prior to joining us, she taught in the Elementary Education department at California State University Long Beach, and was a professor of Mathematics Education at Oklahoma State University. She received her M.A. in 2011 from Sierra Nevada College, and her Ph.D. in 2016 from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her research interests include model-eliciting activities, equity in integrated STEM education, effective STEM teaching and learning practices for every student, integrated STEM education in formal and informal settings, preservice teachers, and students’ dispositions toward integrated STEM.

"My name is Melissa Vega. After high school I went to Pierce College part-time, graduated in 2011 with my AA and a focus on American Sign Language Interpreting. I graduated from ��鷻 in 2024 in Deaf Studies with a minor in Linguistics. I hope to continue my academic career and never stop learning. I enjoy reading, crocheting, and watching tv shows in my free time. I met my partner and bonus sons in 2011 and had my little girl in 2018. We love trying new restaurants and enjoy a Halloween/spooky spirit year-round."

Welcoming Edward Flores, Assistant Professor Specializing in Social Science Education

Edward Flores is an Assistant Professor in the Michael D. Eisner College of Education at ��鷻. He holds a B.A. in Chicana/o Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, a teaching credential in History/Social Science from ��鷻, and a Ph.D. in Education from Claremont Graduate University. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Flores taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District and subsequently managed a Youth and Parent Leadership program, where he collaborated closely with students and educators on Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) initiatives. Notably, he co-organized the founding of the Paula Crisostomo Dream Resource Center at Abraham Lincoln High School, which offers essential resources and services to undocumented students and mixed-status families. Dr. Flores' research centers on fostering critical race consciousness, advancing YPAR methodologies, and promoting K-12 ethnic studies. His work aims to empower historically marginalized communities through education and advocacy.

StrengthUnited Receives $963k for Domestic Violence Community Policing and Advocacy Project

Congressman Tony Cárdenas secured $963,000 in FY24 for StrengthUnited’s Domestic Violence Community Policing and Advocacy Project through StrengthUnited’s Family Justice Center. The funding to support this project is provided by the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) FY 24 Byrne Discretionary Community Project Grant which is part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2024 to assist victims of crime. We are eager to utilize these funds to expand our services to individuals who have experienced interpersonal violence.

The Center for Teaching & Learning has been busy - as usual! - providing exceptional professional development and training experiences for faculty and students. Here is just some of what they've been up to lately:

They have an exciting new issue of CTL on the Cutting Edge coming out this month featuring Dr. Vanessa Goodwin and Dr. Amy Hanreddy on the ITEP program.

Dr. Wendy Murawski, Endowed Chair of the Center, is on sabbatical this fall. Dr. Greg Knotts (Elementary Education) is stepping in to lead CTL this semester.
