Dear Principal Investigators,
We are writing to provide updates on recent federal developments that may impact research funding and operations at ¼ªÏé·».
Federal Funding & Grant Status Update
As you may be aware, the research funding landscape continues to change rapidly, including the recent news about the U.S. Department of Education reducing its workforce by 50%. While federal submission systems remain operational, some agencies may experience delays in proposal reviews, award processing, and communication due to staffing changes. These events have created uncertainty and concern for faculty researchers, students, and staff. Fortunately, there are some positive updates:
- NIH IDC Reduction on Hold: Court orders remain in place, and the proposed NIH indirect cost (IDC) reduction is currently paused. We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates if this changes.
- Active Grants Remain Unaffected: None of our grants have been frozen, allowing research projects to continue as planned.
Next Steps for PIs
While the situation remains fluid, we strongly encourage you to take the following steps to ensure your research activities proceed smoothly:
- Continue Research Projects: Unless you receive specific instructions from your sponsoring agency, please continue your research project in accordance with your grant or contract terms and consistent with Executive Orders released to date. If you receive instructions that affect your project, please inform your Pre-Award Grants & Contracts Analyst immediately for support.
- Proposal Writing and Submissions: We encourage you to proactively develop and submit new proposals. While we know it's hard at times like this, we are here to support you. Please follow the most recent guidance outlined in the corresponding calls for proposals or program announcements. If you are unsure if a submission is available, reach out to your Pre-Award Grants & Contracts Analyst.
- Federal Grant Submissions: Continue submitting proposals for federal grants and contracts to available funding opportunities as long as federal submission systems remain operational. Be aware that agency proposal review timelines may experience delays due to agency-specific implementation plans. Carefully review updated versions of funding opportunities to ensure compliance with any new requirements.
- Monitor Agency Communications: If you receive any award notifications or communications from federal agencies, particularly "Stop-Work" or "Termination" Orders, please immediately contact Dr. Charlene Manzueta at charlene.manzueta@csun.edu to assist in navigating next steps.
- Grant-Related Expenses: Submit all grant-related expenses promptly to allow the post-award team to timely process drawdowns and invoice the granting agencies efficiently.
