SUN Program

Welcome to our College of Education Self-care Initiative, informally called Self-care for U at Northridge, the SUN Program.

It is so wonderful that you are considering self-care as an important way to care for yourself and keep balance and health in your life. Self-care means taking responsibility for yourself to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle at work and in your personal world through individually determined, proactive activities. You are at your best when you attend to yourself in equal measure to others in day-to-day living!

Self-care and COE trauma informed support

As we have continued to experience the impact of the Los Angeles fires as recently as last week, the emotional toll is a very individual experience. According to Melissa Brymer, PhD, director of terrorism and disaster programs at the UCLA-Duke National Center for Child Traumatic Stress, “addressing the psychological fallout from the fires begins with understanding that the level of trauma varies from person to person.” While the trauma is greatest for those who lost their homes, Dr. Brymer says “the psychological toll of the wildfires extends beyond those directly affected. Each update or image of devastation on the screen can contribute to mental exhaustion.” This includes evacuations, power outages, and fear caused by the fires close to us that many of our college community have experienced. One of the most frequently practiced positive psychology interventions worldwide is  . This week, we remember the importance of gratitude as we take vacation time to reflect on the good things in our lives and express thankfulness to others for their kindness and love. But what really is gratitude and how can we engage in it? In a blog in Psychology Today,  Dr. Jolanta Burke, Ph.D. states “gratitude is a disposition (trait) or a state of feeling thankful for what we have in our experiences or circumstances. Gratitude interventions are activities you are encouraged to do to enhance your gratitude.”  Read more
