The Current State of the Publishing Industry: Realities and Opportunities
What are the career opportunities for English majors in today’s publishing industry? A panel of four experienced publishing professionals will discuss the state of the industry today, the availability of jobs, what skills and expertise are required to be competitive, what a book producer does, and overlooked avenues into the publishing world.
Panelists:
Ron Epstein,ÌýPublisher & President, Epstein Custom Media/LA Parent. The Publisher of L.A. Parent magazine and president of Epstein Custom Media, Ron has spent his entire career in the publishing and media industries -- and it all started at the Daily Sundial.
Dan López,ÌýCounterpoint; Editorial Assistant.ÌýDan López is the author of The Show House and an editorial assistant at Counterpoint Press.
Kate Marshall,ÌýEditor, UC Press.ÌýKate Marshall joined UC Press in 2008 and is the acquisitions editor for scholarly and general interest books in the fields of anthropology, food studies, and Latin American studies.

Many English majors focus on careers in publishing and education, but a wide range of professions require stellar writing and communication skills; fields with good salaries and career ladders. Four ¼ªÏé·» English alumni will discuss their professional journeys, how they use their English degrees in their daily work, what skills and expertise students need to compete in today’s workforce, and what they wished they’d done in college to prepare for their careers.
